L O V E B O X

Now if I want to see Beth Ditto in her bra and panties where else am I going to look... Lovebox festival of course. Pop Blimp went on Sunday (Snoop Dogg sadly was not for us). We opted instead for the musical delights of Blondie, Scissor Sisters, Robyn, Marc Almond and the aformentioned Ms Ditto sans clothes.

First up was Marc of the Almond variety. Now lets not beat around the bush, or any of the other foliage in Victoria Park, we just wanted to hear 'Tainted Love'. The first few songs were slow to win us over but once this little gem was unleashed, the Lovebox crowd was eating (Almonds presumably) out of the palm of his hand. 'Say Hello, Wave Goodbye' was the other standout with the perfect opening line: "Standing in the door of The Pink Flamingo, crying in the rain".

Beth... Oh Beth.

Beth's set was memorable not for the songs, which seemed to be good enough Disco/Dance/Dunkin' Donut/Punk tunes, but for her renowned stage antics. She started out dressed in what can only be described as a green tent (I am trying to be nice Rigil). Ok... maybe it was a cape. Lets not forget that she does indeed have one fine voice. Her own material went down well despite the absence of the Gossip tunes. Security went into high alert as she strolled out into the crowd and got lost for about 10 minutes. She kept her mic on though so at least we could hear her 'wooooahs' from time to time. On returning to the stage she seemed a little worse for wear but managed a rousing rendition of Madonna's 'Vogue' before stripping down to her undies. The least said about that the better really. Well... if Gaga can do it so can Ditto.

Blondie

In contrast, Blondie were cool, calm and classy and everything else beginning with 'C'. Opening with 'Union City Blue' they had us right from the word go. Debbie may have left a few of the high notes out in the name of audience participation but the gal has still got it. New tracks 'Mother' and 'What I Heard' fitting in effortlessly with the classics... Call Me, Tide is High, Dreaming, Hanging on the Telephone, Atomic. Particular favourites were (of course) 'Heart of Glass' and 'One Way or Another' which seemed to make the Loveboxers go MENTAL. They ended with a cover of 'Fight For Your Right (To Party)' - nice touch.

The Scissor Sisters.

As always The Sisters were on high sex alert. "What I really wanna do tonight is toughen you up" growled Jake as he flexed his bicep. Ana Matronic was looking for "a man that smells like cocoa butter and cash". Neither had a problem with spelling out their desires. Babydaddy and Del Marquis looked cool while Jake and Ana cavorted in neon rubber (Note to A_D_N for Christmas I want a jacket like Jake's silver shiny disco one). The set list was everything we ever wanted including 'Fire With Fire', 'Comfortably Numb', 'Take Your Mama'.

Robyn

'How many beats can we drop in the space of 3 minutes' Robyn must have thought with her opening track. She soon proved to be a model popstar and certainly the most energetic of the day. The girl can dance...HARD. It was difficult to pick a standout from a setlist that included 'Dancing On My Own', 'Call Your Girlfriend', 'Be Mine' and the gem 'Love Kills'. 'With Every Heartbeat' was however, the ultimate crowd pleaser.

Glastonbury 2011 Review

Yep, that's right. Pop Blimp went to Glastonbury. It's been two years since we set foot on the farm, another amazing experience and yet more unpredictable weather:
  1. Wet
  2. Dry
  3. Scorching
  4. Wet again
More importantly for us it contained the Earth's best musical talent. Crammed into 900 acres of fresh pasture were 180,000 adoring festival goers ready to feed. Here is a taster of Pop Blimp's favorites.

First let's start with Patrick Wolf

The last time Patrick Wolf graced Glastonbury was in 2007 when a darker Patrick took to the John Peel stage. This years performance was the complete opposite. Dressed in a sharp blue suit and opening with 'Tristan' pleased the crowd and ensured he made a noticeable entrance. 'House' and 'Time of my Life' followed along with other great new tracks from his latest album 'Lupercalia'. He then felt obliged to come and meet Pop Blimp in the crowd, as you can see we got quite close to our hero. Classics such as 'The Magic Position' also made it onto the set list and he finished with emotionally charged rendition of 'City', definitely a favorite.

HURTS

Words cannot do them justice for their performance. It is one that we will never forget (currently still best performance on NME poll). It had everything you want from a festival performance, strong emotional lyrics, a Kylie cover and an Opera singer (Richard Sidaway).

Set-list:
  1. Silver Lining = Amazing
  2. Happiness = Happy
  3. Sunday = So Apt (it was Sunday)
  4. Verona = Emotion
  5. Devotion = Epic
  6. Confide in Me = Greatness
  7. Illuminated = Brilliant
  8. Stay = Please Stay
  9. Better then Love = Heaven

Robyn

Fresh from the US, Robyn made a Glastonbury appearance that did not disappoint. Our little Swedish scrapper started the set unable to hear herself, leading to pretty fiery scenes involving a microphone stand, sound-man and some amazing grinding. This did not stop her from belting out some amazing vocals. With sound issues sorted, it became an energetic set which was adored by all who frequented the John Peal Stage. The set mainly concentrated on her latest 'Body Talk' albums and her previous #1 'With Every Heartbeat'. All the tracks translated well as a live performance and, well you just cant beat a bit of Robyn.

Janelle Monae - The Pop Blimp Headline

It has to be said that Pop Blimp didn't know what to expect from Janelle Monae. Captivating the audience from the first second, it was our most fun performance of 2011 . Hidden behind a black hood she joined her monochrome band for an extended version of 'Dance or Die'. We have never seen as many people dancing at a Glastonbury stage before as we did to 'Tight-rope' and 'Cold War'. Fantastic vocals from an all round fun maker, definitely one to see live. She reminded me of a young Tina Turner, dare I say even better at times. Please, please, please don't return to the Thunderdome, we love you we want more.

Little Robyn Red Beast - Remixes

Hey there twitchers..

Robyn is back with an old song remixed, but don't worry it's been remixed to an exhilarating level. 'Feed Me' and 'Sultan & Ned Shepard' have both remixed 'Call Your Girlfriend' and they were both released earlier this month.

Both remixes smash you in the face with a bucket load of 'don't go taking my bucket'.

Call your Girlfriend, yeah i will later if she FEEDs ME:

On a none remix level, us here a blimp central can't wait to see the little Red Breast at Glastonbury this year, after she finishes her tour of America.

Joywave - 77777 Mixtape

This little mixtape has stolen my heart. The cover of Robyn's 'Hang with Me' fits nicely between the orchestral and radio friendly versions of the original. Rewinded vocals make me proper happy too.

Theres a cover of a Limp Bizkit song kicking about somewhere. Loads of autotuned vocal harmonys like a Hide & Seek wannabe.

The stand out track is definately 'Betelgeuse'. Its a non-Glee style mashup of LCD Sound System and Miike Snow, although now I'm imaging a Rachel and Mercedes Diva-off version - *Drools*

77777 is well fit. Waiting to see what Fenway Records do with them next.
